In the course of research on the British Army of the eighteenth century I was able to obtain two very exciting documents: the 1722 and 1749 British Army Articles of War. I won't quote the titles here because they are very verbose, but from what I can tell the contents is much the same, concerning penalties for various crimes, which range from those you'd expect, such as mutiny, to those you wouldn't expect, such as insulting the Royal Family (to which I, a fairly committed anti-monarchist, am both horrified and amused). What is especially striking, however, is the typeface: the 1722 version is printed in blackletter, while the 1749 version is printed in Roman type. My knowledge of printing history isn't strong, but I find this change interesting, and wonder at it.

Should anyone wish for either of these PDFs, please send me a message. They aren't available freely online, but I am fortunate that my alma mater contains some of the best collections in the world, so I was able to gain access. I would like to make them more freely available online at some point, but that would require me to work out how in the first place.

I'm over 10k into this Flight of the Heron fic, with no end in sight. It hinges around a simple premise which is made clear in the first chapter, and as such, follows the last three meetings of Ewen Cameron and Keith Windham, whereafter it diverges. The challenge is this: I can either write with canon, borrowing lines and dialogue as I see fit to better weave the two stories together (I hope) or I try and write my own versions of the last three meetings, which is problematic in that there's a good chance they won't be as impactful as the originals. So far I have chosen the former, but I'm not convinced entirely of it. Anyways, in order to solve that problem, I decided to post the first chapter on here, if only so I can look at it in a format that isn't instantly editable. If anyone reads this, don't take what I have here as final — this is still very much a first draft, and most certainly do not take my Gaelic for anything other than hastily researched.

Reading DK Broster's The Flight of the Heron has reminded me once again what a weird city Edinburgh is, and so I thought I would put down a few of my thoughts on the city, as someone who lived in the Old Town for several years and who knows it fairly well.

Title: Dominion
Rating: G for now
Pairing: HH/WB

Author's Note: About a year ago I began what has become probably my most consuming piece of fic ever written — a Titanic AU. No, not the James Cameron film — although I may have nicked one or two ideas from that — but rather the sinking of the ship herself. However, as I did not feel comfortable basing a romance fic around a real-life event in which 1500 people died, I chose instead to write about a ship identical-in-all-but-name-and-company, with different passengers and crew, although much of what happened remains the same as I have based many of the details on accounts given by survivors.

And now, without much ado — the first chapter of Dominion.

A couple bits from my selkie story, in which Bush is a selkie and Hornblower, having lost Hotspur's first lieutenant to an accident and in desperate need of another, steals Bush's skin. He realises quite quickly what he's done and returns it, but instead of killing him as he expects, Bush asks to stay on as lieutenant for reasons of his own.

An unfinished, unpolished fairy story I might eventually go back to and finish. Usual suspects. Blatantly stolen from Cornish and Irish mythology, and Hans Christian Andersen, of course.

I realised after writing this that I wanted a different POV. So here it goes, on the scrap pile.

HH/WB, the usual.

I like the ending I wrote more because I wanted more resolution and more kissing, but I figured I'd share this anyways.

Snippets from Hornblower stories that may or may not end up in finished ones. Some lengthy, some short. Most mature, in some way.

I've been doing some reading (as you do) about 18th/19th century dining, and I came across this fascinating bit of trivia: apparently at certain chop-houses, roast beef was served with "gill-ale", which is an ale made with ground ivy (from what I've read, in place of hops.) Now, of course, it's very difficult to find such a thing nowadays, but BUT I have found that apparently Lincoln College, Oxford serves it on May 25th to students of Brasenose!

(For the record, I don't know if it actually contains ivy, but the tradition is it does. That being said, All Souls no longer does their Duck Hunt with a real duck, so we shall see.)

I've always wondered how caricaturists would have lampooned Hornblower in universe.

So I wrote something faintly slashy.

Figured I'd keep this as a sideblog's sideblog to write about writing stories and the things I'm reading. I have ZERO understanding about Dreamwidth so it'll be an adventure.
